The Great Wall of China is considered one of the world’s greatest masterpieces. The statistics about the wall are well known: it is 22,000 kilometers (13,00) miles long, took 1,800 years to build and as many as 400,000 people may have given their lives for its birth.
However, the stories behind the building of the Wall are better at conveying its true scope. The Wall itself is not one, unbroken barrier. Instead it is a collection of successive walls, totaling more than 22,000 kilometers. The most remarkable aspect of the Wall today is that the totality of the structure has been well preserved, including the many passes, towers, shelters and horse tracks along the way. The Chinese have preserved the materials that the wall is constructed out of, as well as the surrounding terrain.
