With the publication of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a play about Harry’s son, interest in the beloved children’s series is surging again. If you are one of those Potter nerds who just can’t get enough of the series, then explore these five ways you can live just like a witch or wizard.
Visit Harry Potter World
Universal’s Harry Potter World continues to impress, putting pressure on Disney World to completely revamp Hollywood Studios. Visitors to Universal: Orlando can ride the Hogwarts Express, play in Diagon Alley, explore Hogsmeade, obtain a wand from Ollivanders, and even eat at the Leaky Cauldron. A ride takes you far above Hogwarts castle on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. At the other land in Diagon Alley, you can ride Escape from Gringotts where you will be chased by banker trolls. Hungry? Visiting the Leaky Cauldron will get you traditional English fare, topped off by a butter beer.
Universal Anaheim has also gotten in on the Harry Potter action, with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which opened last year.
Although you certainly can’t fly on a broomstick, that doesn’t stop you from playing Quidditch on the ground! Quidditch is still played while running with a broomstick. Players chase a volleyball, which they throw into hula hoops suspended in air. In this version of the game, beaters hurl dodgeballs at the players. There is officially a Quidditch World Cup, just like there is in the book.
Although you can’t attend Hogwarts in person (yet), you are able to take correspondence courses through the internet. A virtual school lets you be sorted into your House and take a few basic classes, just like Harry and his pals. Even better, attend a college where Harry Potter is an actual college course. Yale goes the theology route, with a course called “Christian Theology and Harry Potter” which explores the idea of the savior and resurrection in the books.
Wisconsin’s Lawrence University has a class titled “Thinking About Harry Potter,” which explores the politics introduced in the book and the values the characters espouse. Maryland’s Frostburg State University gives students the chance to look at “The Science Behind Harry Potter,” where they can discuss how the creatures and physical feats of the book could be brought to life.
Attend a Convention
Geek out with your fellow Potter fans by attending a convention. LeakyCon is the oldest conference dedicated to the Harry Potter world. There are special guests, panels, lectures, quizzes, games and opportunities to dress up as your favorite character. The con also features performances of wizard rock, sing-alongs and movie screenings. At the Infinitus convention, similar activities are on tap, but also provide opportunities to attend the great Potter balls, like the Night of Frivolity or Yule Ball. Many of the actors from the films are also on the convention circuit, popping up in places like Dragon Con, San Diego Comic Con and the Wizard Cons.
