Harvesting green energy is becoming a priority to more and more scientists all over the world. With several green energy sources at our disposal, researchers are creating new designs in order to built machines able to harvest the energy of the wind, sun and waves. However, sometimes they do not need a completely new design. Sometimes, the best ideas came by taking into account the designs we already have and improving them. The Vortex bladeless wind turbines were invented as alternatives to the standard wind turbines.
Standard wind turbines face opposition from many people all over the world, but especially environmentalists who point out the danger the spinning blades pose to birds and other flying animals. Moreover, large clusters of wind turbines create much noise, a clear disadvantage when they are placed near populated areas. Another disadvantage is their sheer size. When they are used for commercial installations, groups of wind turbines can occupy a very large surface.
The Vortex bladeless turbines come to fight against all of these disadvantages. These prototypes have a very small footprint, use few moving parts and what’s more, harvest energy in complete silence. The turbines are made of a reed like mast that use the movements of the air called vorticles. Reacting to them, the mast starts oscillating. This vibration movement causes the magnets located in the base of the Vortex unit to start generating energy.
Another advantage of the units is the fact that they are more cost efficient than their larger counterparts. Using few moving parts they are cheaper to produce and to maintain. As they require no blades to function, the Vortex units can be gathered closer together, thus generating more power per square meter.
In order to bring the Vortex turbines to the market, the team behind them is planning to launch a crowdfunding campaign. If it is successful, the first unit to reach the market will be the Mini: a 4 kW, 12.5 meter (41 ft) high unit. What do you think of this interesting new wind turbine?
