When nature and technology meet the result can be only special. Created by Studio Drift, Shylight is a light sculpture that unfolds and retreats in a fascinating choreography during a 30 foot (9 meter) fall. The source of inspiration of this special installation is a highly evolved natural mechanism called nyctinasty that is used by certain types of flowers for reasons of defense or energy conservation.
Shylight is the result of a research period of five years during which the team from Studio Drift has tried to find a method through which an inanimate object may mimic those changes that express character and emotions.
The beautiful sculpture is created out of aluminium, polished stainless steel and many layers of organic silk which cause it to move very graciously. It unfolds by a system of springs, while gravity lets it slight down and a motor controls the upward movement. The movement of the lights can be controlled by an iPhone or iPad, opening up a range of possibilities such as a choreography to music. A single installation can always be expended with additional Shylights.
The light sculptures by Studio Drift are part of many museum – and private collections all over the world. Below you can see in action a beautiful collection of Shylights permanently installed at Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam few months ago.
