Researchers from all over the world are studying different ways of projecting tactile experiences. Those working at Disney’s Pittsburgh branch are trying to create a touchscreen that allows the user to feel shapes and textures. Their method uses electronic impulses. At the same time, at Bristol University, scientists are developing a system called UltraHaptics. It uses ultrasonic force fields to project the tactile sensations of different object. Said projections can be felt in mid air. At the moment, the new system is designed for a haptic computer. It time, this system could be used to create touchable holograms.
The UltraHaptics projected tactile computer interface was created by the research and development team of Bristol University. They are part of the Bristol Interaction and Graphics (BIG) research group. As mentioned before, the system uses ultrasonic force fields that share an intense focus point above the computer display. The pressure of the radiation is strong enough to be felt by the skin. As a result, once the system is started, we can feel the shape of whatever is being projected. Many have tried starting such projects in the past. Some were somewhat successful, while others failed. Tactile projection has been obtained in the past with the help of vortices of air.
The UltraHaptics system is still being developed. At the moment the pressure above the computer display is just enough for the skin to feel it. Several changes might be made in the future. During testing, the team managed to receive haptic feedback in mid-air. The culmination of this project is to create a touchable hologram. The system can be used to trace the pattern of the hologram.
