History hides many secrets and disappearances. Some are mere legends. Others have historical proof to sustain them. The disappearance of the crew of the Mary Celeste is one of them. Another secret is what really happens in the Bermuda triangle. So far no one has been able to answer this question. One of the biggest mysteries in history is the fate of lost city of Atlantis. Was it ever real? How did it disappear? What actually happened in Atlantis? These are the questions historians ask themselves even today. Some believe they have found the lost city at the bottom of the sea. Others keep searching.
Atlantis is a legendary island. It was first mentioned in Plato‘s dialogues Timaeus and Critias which were written in 360BC. Plato believed Atlantis had been a naval power that had conquered many part of Western Europe and Africa 9.000 years before Solon’s time (638 BC – 558 BC ). After trying to invade Athens and failing, Atlantis sank into the ocean in a single day. In antiquity, few people believed in the existence of Atlantis. It was in modern times that historians started to give credence to the story. Many historians believe Atlantis was meant to be an allegory that warns people not to be overly ambitious.
However, there are those who believe Atlantis might have been real. Now the word is used to describe any lost civilizations. Still, many scientists are trying to find the Atlantis of Plato’s dialogues. Some believe the remains of the city will be found beneath the Azores. Others suggest that the sunken city might be somewhere north of Cadiz. It is also believed that the story was translated wrong and the city actually sunk around 1500 BC. At that time a massive volcano eruption ripped apart the island of Santorini. The force of the disaster was great enough to have been able to sink another island. However, the location of Santorini is nowhere near Plato’s location of Atlantis.
The lost city of Atlantis sparks interest even today. Some search for it, while others see it as a lesson to be learned. Do you think the story could be true?
