The voices of millions of people who react to something, and gave their support, even if just by using a hashtag, can be heard. Twitter has become so powerful, that many twitter hashtag campaigns have results in real life, results that alter someone’s life for the better. We selected two such campaigns, each with a different goal: one on taxes in the USA and one on social involvement in India.
Everyone knows what a hashtag is: that word starting with “#” used more and more on social media. On Twitter, marketers have learnt to use hashtags for their brands, celebrities have learnt to use them for their relationships with the fans, people standing in front of a computer have learnt to use them to express their ideas and their interests. Around the world, millions of people follow certain hashtags, in order to be updated with their particular interests.
1. #40dollars – The White House

In a time of troubled political climate, the Obama administration took matters to the Internet, by starting dialogues about taxes. In December of 2011, a payroll tax was set to expire, which meant that many American working families would suffer a loss of 40 dollars per paycheck. In an effort to give a voice to the people, the White House launched a twitter campaign based on the question: What does #40dollars mean to you?
The response was overwhelming. Many people tweeted an answer to this question, saying they could not afford losing those 40 dollars. As a result, a two month extension was attained. In February of 2012, the campaign was re-launched and helped block the cuts for the rest of 2012.
2. #awaazdo – Unicef India
Awaazdo means lend your voice in Hindi and it is a twitter hashtag campaign aiming to get 8 million uneducated children in India into schools. With support from Bollywood celebrities, who were key to this campaign, by touching the hearts of their fans, hashtag #awaazdo was used more than a thousand times during a three month period and generated more than 200,000 sign-ups to support the movement, making it a successful campaign.
Twitter hashtags have played their part in these campaigns and in many others. It just goes to show that we’re all people, and we’re all connected to each other, even if solely by Internet. Our voices make a difference, we just have to speak up (or hashtag away).
