Alcatraz was actually named as such due to the large colonies of pelicans that were homed by the island. In time, La Isla de Los Alcatraces became Alcatraz. In 1854, the island became home to the first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast.
When Alcatraz became a prison in the 1930s, it brought in some of the worst criminals in the United States. However, many prisons actually asked to be transferred here. It featured only one man per cell and many inmates felt that the conditions here were much better than in any other prison in the US.
The fact that Alcatraz was inescapable was tested by several inmates throughtout the years. It is reported that 36 people tried to escape Alcatraz. 23 of those men were captured before they reached their purpose, other 6 were shot and 2 drowned. 5 people simply went missing from Alcatraz and it was thought that they also drowned. What really happened to them remains a mystery.
Frank Morris, John and Clarence Anglin are three of those prisoners. Their attempt to gain freedom has actually inspired a movie, Escape from Alcatraz. Since their bodies were never found in the San Francisco Bay, it is possible that their attempt to escape from the prison was successful after all. Moreover, swimming to shore was never believed to be impossible, even though the currents can be very strong in the area.
In 1963 Alcatraz was closed down permanently. It seems that the decision was linked to the escape of the year 1962, when John Paul Scott managed to get out of the prison and swim to the shore, where he was arrested. From that point it was considered that Alcatraz wasn’t actually escape-proof. So, what purpose did it serve?
Currently, Alcatraz is open for tourists to visit. Tourists may choose guided tours or enjoy a self experience inside the impressive prison.
