Basically, you can make a lampshade from everything. There are infinite materials you can use to create a lampshade. The most common forms of lampshades are the cylindrical and conical that stays on the floor, desk or table. Also the suspended types are fashionable these days.
To make a basic fabric lampshade, you just need to be careful in following a few steps:
1. Stick the fabric to a backing material
It is important to know that thicker fabric prevent light from passing through. The best to do before you buy the fabric is to hold the fabric up to a window. This is how you will see how the light passes through. Although the color is a matter of tastes is good to know that red and yellow tones gives a warm light, greens and blues a cold light.
The backing material is a special material for lampshades. It is semi-transparent and self-adhesive. This material will be gently smoothed over the fabric.
2. Measure lampshade ring
Most lampshades have two frames: one at top, the other at bottom. The top ring is that one where the light fitting will go, the other is plain. After you measure the circumference of the rings, add 2 cm for the overlap.
3. Cut the material
The width will be taken from the rings’ circumference. The height that is need to be cut will be the height of the backing material. To this height you have to add few centimetres.
4. Attach the material to the wire frame
For this step you need to use a double-sided adhesive. Put a thin piece of tape along the width of the fabric at the bottom and on the top. Have a thicker piece on the outside edge. The wire will attach to the thinner part. The thicker piece will be folded over.
Put the wire rings at the extremities of the material where you have the thin sticky tape. Carefully roll the rings along till you have all the material attached.
Bend the thicker line of the sticky tape over the top of the wire frame.
This is it. You have made the lampshade. The extra decoration is your choice.
If you don’t have enough patience to create a lampshade from zero, you still can find enough pleasure to recondition an old one. In this case too, the only limit is your imagination.
Making yourself a lampshade can bring you very much pleasure. Every time you have visitors you can proud yourself with your creation. Have you ever tried to do a lampshade?
