1. The infamous black cat
If a black cat crosses your path, the event is said to bring bad luck. In Medieval times black cats were burned at the stake or drowned because of this superstition. Surprisingly, though, the black cat is a sign of good luck in the British Isles, especially in Scotland where it is seen as a sign of prosperity.
2. Don’t walk under a ladder
Another common superstition is that you must never walk under a ladder. People believe that this superstition comes from the fact that the ladder was used in the Medieval times to bring down a body from the gallows. It is also believed that if you walk under a ladder, your soul will end up in hell.
3. Opening an umbrella in the house
It is believed that opening an umbrella in the house is a sure sign of bad luck. The belief was popular in the 18th century; people think that if you open an umbrella in the house anything bad can happen, even the death of a family member.
4. Breaking a mirror gives you seven years of bad luck
This is probably among the most common superstitions in the world. Anywhere you go you can count on stumbling across this superstition. It is believed that mirrors are gates to the soul; therefore if you break a mirror you will damn your soul.
5. The number 13
Most people believe the number thirteen brings bad luck. American buildings jump from the 12th floor to the 14th. Moreover, if it’s Friday the 13th then you should double the bad luck.
