Now and then, objects belonging to famous people go up for auction. Sometimes we hear stories about dresses or jewelry belonging to actresses such as Marilyn Monroe raising hefty sums. Other times we see famous painting or sketches finding new homes for very large amounts of money. Most recently, Marlon Brando’s Harley motorcycle was auctioned off and sold for $256,000.
Marlon Brando was a famous American actor and film director. He was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two of them. He starred in movies such as “A Streetcar named Desire, The Godfather, Last Tango in Paris, Guys and Dolls, On the Waterfront and Julius Caesar.” His role in the 1953 movie, ” The Wild One“, helped shape biker culture.
Marlon Brando had been a long time motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed going on long rides in New York both before and after he became famous. In an interview, he talked about his passion for riding motorcycle and said: “It still pleases me to be awake during the dark, early hours before morning when everyone else is still asleep. I’ve been that way since I first moved to New York. I do my best thinking and writing then. During those early years in New York, I often got on my motorcycle in the middle of the night and went for a ride-anyplace. There wasn’t much crime in the city then, and if you owned a motorcycle, you left it outside your apartment and in the morning it was still there.”
The motorcycle that was up for sale was a Harley Davidson FLH Electra-Glide. It was purchased by Marlon Brando forty-five years ago in April 8, 1970. The bike had been driven over a distance of 13,859 miles. The auction were it was sold for the above mentioned price was Julien’s Hollywood Legends auction in Hollywood.
