Helmets should be a must whether we talk about riding bicycles, motorcycles or simply learning how to roller-skate. They protect us in the eventuality of a fall. With a helmet, there is a lower risk of concussions or even brain damage in case an accident occurs.
Usually, helmets have foam inside them. However, the Rockwell helmet comes with something new. Instead of foam, the helmet has bean bags that protect the cyclist’s head. With this new invention, the forces of an impact are spread more effectively and the risk of injury is lowered considerably.
This technology has been used in ski helmets in the past. It is known as the Vaco12 technology. The pods of beans used in this innovation spread the impact energy in many directions. This is opposed to the foam that only absorbs the energy up to a certain point.
Moreover, the individual pods of bean make it easier for the Rockwell helmet to conform to the user’s head. The design is much more flexible and less material is used in this case. Also, the helmet has a rigid outer shell and textile softshell mid-layer. These two layers allow the head to breathe. Many helmets have problems allowing the head to breathe, but the company stated that thanks to the space between the pods, this one has no such problem.
The Rockwell helmet is mainly aimed at urban cyclists. However, the company believes it could be used for mountain cycling as well. Production is starting and Rockwell wishes to see the helmets hit the market by summer or fall. The prices will range between €110 and €140 (US$150 to $190). Moreover, the helmets will come in a variety of colors.
Would you buy the Rockwell helmet for the moments when you are riding your bike?
