The word “gangster” is well known nowadays. The most famous gangsters in the world lived like kings and made more money than what they could spend, naturally from prostitution, gambling, alcohol or drugs. Hollywood is now making movies inspired from their lives, but in reality many people were terrorized by these gangsters and their methods of making money. Below we find three famous gangers who impressed the world with their fortunes.
1. Meyer Lansky
By his real name Maier Suchowljansky, Meyer was born in Russia, in 1902. When he was only 10, he moved to the United States. Meyer Lansky formed a partnership with Charles Luciano and Bugsy Siegel named Murders Inc. His success was actually given by the fact that he was a financial genius who developed the National Crime Syndicate, the first step to organized crime in America. Meyer Lansky made his impressive fortune from money laundering, gambling and other operations in Cuba, Switzerland and Vegas. An article published by New York Times indicated that Meyer actually had more than $300 million by the time of his death. He died in Miami, at the age of 83.
2. Charles Luciano
Charles “Lucky” Luciano was born in 1897. He was considered to be the king of modern organized crime in America. In his youth, he earned his reputation and respect in the mob life while doing the dirty work for Guisseppe Masseria. Soon, he decided to make his own business, the Luciano crime family and later named it the Genovese crime family. In 1946 he was deported to Sicily, and was forced to live there for the rest of his life. Luciano died of heart attack at the Naples International Airport, before meeting with movie producers that wanted to make a film inspired by his life. The exact amount of money Luciano owned at the time of his death is not known, but it is speculated that his fortune included several millions.
3. Bugsy Siegel
Born in Brooklyn in 1906, Benjamin Siegel, by his real name, became an associate to his friend, Jew Meyer Lansky. After killing for the Murder Inc, Bugsy Siegel started working for Lucky Luciano and his organization. Working for Luciano brought him many enemies, so in the 30s Bugsy was forced to move to Los Angeles. Discovering the secrets to gambling laws of Nevada, Bugsy had stolen millions of dollars from the Syndicate to open a casino hotel in Las Vegas, name the Flamingo. Things didn’t work out so well for him in 1947, when his friends found out what he did. He was murdered in his home.
Gangsters lived by their own rules and made a lot of money. They had spectacular lives, met famous musicians and Hollywood stars, but they did it all by breaking all rules and living behind the law. What do you think about these famous gangsters?
