Girls is the latest hit show produced by HBO, and is a series about four young female characters struggling to make it in New York. Girls has succeeded what other TV shows only dream of: a network of connected fans who constantly share their thoughts on the show, compare themselves to the lead characters and tweet away with the series’ signature hashtag: #mistakesGIRLSmake – which was introduced before the premiere of the first season.
The show instantly reminded watchers of the previous HBO series centered around four girls in the Big Apple – Sex and the City. Even though this is the topic of many conversations between fans, there is one major difference between the two shows: the interaction with fans.
The connection between fans and the Girls is amazing: fans connect with the shows characters when having a break from work or simply laying about in their homes. HBO’s marketing team used social media to its full advantages, transforming the characters you see in a thirty minute long show on TV into your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest.
The fan involvement is so high that the Tumblr blog for the show was created especially because of the fans- they created Gif’s with the Girls from the show inspiring the social media marketing team to create the blog “What should we call Girls”, which is curated by HBO but has content created solely by fans.
The energy of fans has kept all social media accounts active since the season one finale. Moreover, HBO has made Girls into a staple of social media by integrating their fans lives into its feeds. Using the original hashtag and the one created for seaons two – #resolutionsGIRLSbreak, HBO calls out for fans to express their favorite mistakes, resolutions and quotations from the show.
GIRLS has managed to create an amazing connection between viewers and characters, taking the show to the next level when it comes to involvement of fans. Are you a fan of GIRLS?
