1. Water Balloon
The Water Balloon is still considered to be a lot of fun today. It was invented by Edgar Ellington, in the 1950s. Ellington decided to create a waterproof sock using latex and cotton which he tested with the use of water. The inventor got mad because he saw a stream of water running out of the balloon and he threw it on the ground. Actually, this is how a new idea, and consequently a new toy, was born. Soon after that moment, water balloons invaded the market.
You probably had no idea, but the Frisbee was also invented in the 1950s. Its origins started at the Yale University, where students enjoyed playing catch with pie plates. The first toys of this type were created by Warren Franscioni and Walter Morrison, who named them Flying Saucers. They sold under the name of Wham-O, but were later renamed into Frisbees. Nowadays, the Frisbee is very popular, actually entire tournaments being dedicated to this sport.
Probably one of the most icons toys of all time, the Barbie doll was created by Ruth Handler. Ruth decided to create a fashion doll for young girls, just like her daughter. The doll was named Barbie after Ruth’s young girl, Barbara. Barbie is the best-selling doll of all time and one of the most popular toys in the world. Well, the concept has managed to draw a lot of criticism, too. The unrealistic body shape of these toys was believed to negatively influence young girls. Currently, Barbie dolls can now be found in more modest clothing, as well as having a more realistic body shape.
One of the greatest toys of all time remains the Teddy Bear. This wasn’t a toy of the 1950s, but it was actually created in the 1920s.
