Truli are beautiful old stone buildings, conical dry built with techniques of prehistoric origin. The period when the building were raised is uncertain. According to some historical evidences the existence of dwellings in the area dates around 17th century. Trulli can be found in the whole area of Puglia, but Alberobelo is known as the Capital of the Trulli.
The origin of the design has many theories. The most widely accepted is that during that time the construction of stable dwellings was highly-taxed. The inhabitants succeed to adapt building these houses with the local stone. During time the houses survived intact and are still in use nowadays.
Each building is a unique construction with different shape and size. The grey cone-shaped roof ends with a sphere or hemisphere shape. Some of the buildings have two level, others are combined in a complex of communicating houses. The interior usually is arranged as a single chamber.
A very interesting feature of these buildings is the symbol painted on the roof. Most of the houses have on their roof Christian symbols such the cross. The most frequent symbols are represented by a circle divided into four quarters an in each of them are painted four letters: S,C,S,D. It is supposed that these initials come from the name of two saints: Santo Cosma and Santo Damiano.
