From commercial interior designers, to suburban construction specialists, there are several niches to wade through if you want to find the perfect contractor. However, if you ever get the opportunity to have your own home built from the ground up, here is a short list of questions that you might want to ask your construction contractors.

What is the Estimated Completion Date?

This is a reasonable question. And, since construction crews work at different paces, the answers will vary with each new project. It all depends on what you want done to your new home, how many additions, the style of your frame and rooms, and how big each room will be. There are also roof and flooring factors, which come into play a little later. But, on average, construction companies give you a 3 to 4-month estimate before the home is livable.

Do You Need Owner-Provided Supplies or Preparations?

It is always nice for a homeowner to offer to purchase supplies, but not necessary. Usually, construction crews are well-prepared with their own tools and preparations. You can provide them with some non-perishable snacks and bottles of cold water, but that would be the extent of your help.

Will You Accept Outside Influence in Terms of Creative Designs?

If you want to give your input to a contractor’s creative designs, simply speak up. Contractors are usually open-minded to the design ideas of their clients. This is your dream home, after all. However, you should set up a meeting time to be formal, since many of these construction contractors are busy out in the field during the morning and afternoon.

Do You Follow ALL Updated Safety Regulations?

Any construction foreman worth their weight in gold will answer yes and be honest with this question. However, if you ever feel iffy about a construction project and how it turned out, hire your own contractor inspector to double check that all safety measures and regulations have been dotted and crossed. Your safety is absolute number one, especially when it’s your house on the line.

The aforementioned questions are natural to ask, and construction crews won’t be offended by your inquiries. In fact, they are used to that…and sometimes much worse. As long as you are polite and respectful of their ideas and answers, you will have no issues. However, if you find yourself butting heads with the architect or contractor, considering looking elsewhere for construction services.
