Paul Beatty is an American author. In they year 2016, he won the MAN Booker Prize for his novel “The Sellout.” It is the first time that the writer from US was honored this way. He was born in Los Angeles in the year 1962. He has received an MFA in Creative Writing from Brooklyn College and he did his MA in psychology from Boston University. Paul Beatty becomes the first US author who wins the Man Booker Prize, which is the world’s most prestigious English-Language literary award. The novel, which grabbed him this prestigious award, is “The Sellout.” This was announced on 29th, Oct 2016 (Tuesday).
As per the jury of Man Booker Prize, the novel was very shocking and unexpectedly funny which portrays his native Los Angeles, using the very prompt satire to explore the racial equality in the fictional neighborhood. He is a 54 years old writer and he says that the journey of writing this novel has really been too long and was really a great experience for him. He was really overwhelmed to receive that award. It was presented by Prince Charles’s wife Camilla.
The jury was very happy to talk about the novel. He says, it has reflected the equally affectionate and bitterly ironic portrait of the city and its inhabitants. He broadly lays emphasis on solutions, assumptions and relations. In this the writer comes out to be a well-intentioned hero in this corrupt world. US newspapers has aired a lot about this news, the novel is gaining more popularity day by day. When the award was announced at a glitzy black tie ceremony with some of the leading authors in London.
The winner of the Man Booker Prize receives $64,100, 59, 000 although the most of the amount comes from the huge sale which promoted at the moment when the judges announces their decision.
This award was launched in the year 1969, it has awarded writers like Iris Murdoch, McEwan and Salman Rushdie. From 2013, it was only open to the commonwealth authors and this decision became highly controversial in Britain. No US author had won it till now. ‘The Sellout’ happens to be the fourth novel of Beatty and this novel has won the National Book Critics Circle award in the US. This novel was narrated by Bonbon, an African- American resident of the run-down town of Dickens, Los Angeles. He is on trial for attempting to re-enforce slavery and segregation in the local high school as a means of bringing about civic order. World Newspapers selling has also increased due to this news.
