Installing Ceiling Fans in Our House

Installing a ceiling fan is actually a good idea for many situations. In fact, ceiling fan technology has progresses in the past few decades and we could actually save money by installing it. The temperatures can be reduced as much as 10 degrees by ensuring good air circulation. The energy bill won’t be as high as using an air conditioning unit. In the winter, we could also warm the interior by pushing down air from the ceiling. It means that we shouldn’t use heater too much. In this case, it should be clear that ceiling fans are absolute money saver. Ceiling fans won’t only help us reduce costs, it could also enhance the overall look of our interior. There are many ornamented ceiling fans in the market that we can choose.

Ceiling fans are available in different price range, but it may be necessary to avoid choosing cheaper one. These models may look nice when they are new, but they could wear our and the blade may warp more easily after prolonged usages. Also, cheap ceiling fans could be constructed from thinner material that rattles and vibrates after a period of use. The size of the room also determines the size of fan that we choose. A 50 square feet room or smaller, should use 29-inch fan, 36-inch fan for 75 square feet room, 42-inch fan for 100 square feet room and 54-inch fan for 400 square feet room. For improved safety and efficiency, the fan should be placed in the middle of the room and the ideal height should be about 10 feet from the floor.

If the fan is placed too low, it would be less efficient in circulating the air. It means that we should have proper height clearance. The motor is also essential for the performance and efficiency of the ceiling fan. Some motors could be poorly constructed or undersized for the fan. Problems related to improper motor may include clicking, humming and overheating. It means that we should choose fans with sealed, lubricated bearings, heavy duty windings and high quality motors. Proper ceiling fans should also have long warrant period. For optimal circulation, the blades should be held at about 15 degree angle.

Many ceiling fans have reversible rotation and it can be confusing which way the fan should turn. The blades must rotate counter clockwise during warm weather to cool the interior down. They should spin clockwise during winter to push warmer air in the ceiling, because heat tends to rise at upper areas. Blades should be balanced and evenly weighted by the manufacturer before shipping. When installing ceiling fan, we should make sure that all blades are tightly fastened and properly aligned. If a blade seems misaligned, we could try to gently bend it into the right position. Standard fan weighs about 50 pounds or more, so we should make sure that it is properly braced. In this case, we need to a strong mounting bracket that is installed properly between the joist.
