Will Faraday Future finally shape up to be Tesla’s biggest competition in the electric car arena? If reactions to the release of its first concept car, the FFZERO1, are any indication, Tesla may eventually have a fight on its hands.
What’s the FFZERO1?
Faraday Future’s FFZERO1 is a hypercar concept that delivers 1,000 horsepower through four-wheel drive that has with zero emissions. This is officially the first car from Faraday Future. Unfortunately, there are no immediate details about when it may go into production.
What About its Design?
The FFZero1 definitely had people talking with its exciting and bold design. The big air intakes and fairings contributed to an overall look that was part sport scar, part fighter jet. The drivers’ seat seems more like a cockpit for a very cocky pilot than a staid driver of cars. The spoiler is right out of the space age, which may turn some people off.
Still No Production Date?
Faraday Future is somewhat circumspect about its actual production. The company believes a two-year timetable would be workable. What the car is designed to do right now is show off Faraday’s prowess and get people talking about it, particularly in the very competitive electric car space. Mercedes, Jaguar and Lexus are just the tip of the iceberg in the luxury electric category.
How can Faraday take the lead? Well, for one thing it has managed to pioneer technologies like augmented driver reality and a superior user interface. The company also made great headway in reducing drag and increasing downforce, which is why the car looks like a jet. Then there is the new design language that car buffs will need to learn, like the longitudinal feature line, which is called ‘UFO line’ for short. These details will all be integrated into future cars, becoming a key part of its signature.
How Can Faraday Take on Tesla?
Faraday is not just a small company turning out original super and hyper cars. Like Tesla, it has taken advantage of huge tax credits in Nevada and got the backing of Jia Yueting, a Chinese billionaire who chipped in a huge amount of cash. The factor will cost the company about $1 billion, which shows it is serious about mass production of cars. The company hopes to add at least 4,500 jobs in the state.
Like Tesla, Faraday is also investing heavily in other green technologies. They have a battery giga-factory under construction near Reno, with the help of an enormous $1.4 billion tax incentive from the state.
What’s Under the Hood?
Faraday’s Variable Platform Architecture (VPA) reinvents the body-on-chassis principle of mid-20th century cars design. In that era, many body styles were built on top of one framework. Relying on a VPA allows Faraday to fast-track development of new vehicle lines. If the platform design goes well, it could have a major impact on its rivals in the automotive industry.
Although some analysts are jittery about the lack of production details, others are bullish on Faraday. Now that the company has revealed it has applied for testing of a driverless car in California, it’s safe to say the electric supercar wars are on.
