Elio Motors is speeding toward new production goals in 2016, and just took on the New York International Auto Show. The Elio is an unusual motor vehicle which is often described as the anti-Tesla. Why? Well, let’s start with pre-orders for its new three-wheeled vehicle. Like Tesla, Elio has scored with a good number of preorders (Tesla had an impressive 400,000 people sign up for pre-orders of the Model 3). However, with Elio, the scale of everything is just a bit smaller. Its vehicle is economical, with reservation holders only needing to shell out $100 to $1,000 to stake a claim on new wheels.
Paul Elio, the company’s founder, said that the company’s mpg estimates are in the range of 49 mpg city and 84 mpg highway, all in a vehicle that costs just $6,800. Elio estimated their current range at an average of 81.4 miles per gallon, which is a great number. But Elio, unlike Tesla founder Elon Musk, tends to talk down the revolutionary potential of its cars.
