One of the greatest remnants of antiquity lies deep in the Wadi Mussa valley in Jordan. It is called Petra, a city that was lost to Western knowledge for hundreds of years.
The most striking building of this vast city carved in sandstone is the Treasury, known as Al Kazneh, which looks as stately as any Roman temple of the time. Many people remember the Treasury because of its appearance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which were actually filmed in Petra itself. The exterior shots are real, demonstrating the amazing capability of the craftsmen who somehow created the structure out of existing stone. In the Hollywood version of the tale, Indiana Jones goes on a wild goose chase inside the Treasury in search of the Holy Grail.
