In the world of ballet, Misty Copeland is an anomaly. While dancers are traditionally tall and willowy, she stands just 5 feet 2 inches tall. In a dance world which is expensive and favors the rich, Misty came from a poor background, yet rose to the role of prima ballerina for the American Ballet Theater in New York. Copeland is at the vanguard of a changing dance world and her life is already inspiring young dancers everywhere. However, her story has valuable lessons for people everywhere.
The tried and true trope “it’s never too late” applies to Copeland. Unlike her peers, most of whom began training seriously at age 6, Misty didn’t take a single lesson until she was 13 years old. Copeland was from a large family without the funds it takes to take lessons from top ballet teachers. Still, she persevered. Copeland took her first lessons in a Boys and Girls Club activity from a local teacher. The teacher recognized Copeland’s amazing talents and gave her a scholarship to her own ballet school.
- The lesson is that it’s never too late to go after your passions.
