The newest installment of the massively popular Star Wars saga is swiftly approaching, making fans more hyped than ever. The release of the trailer a few days back grabbed the attention of thousands of people all around the globe. However, in Odessa things were taken one step further. A huge statue of Darth Vader now rests in front of one of the city’s factories. The reason? It gave a new purpose to a Lenin statue located in the same spot and scheduled for demolition.
The statue of Lenin placed outside the factory had been scheduled for “decommunization” by president Petro Poroshenko based on the new Ukrainian law on de-Communization. The law dictated that all landmarks and geographical names dedicated to Lenin and other Communist leaders had to be eliminated. Instead of allowing it to be completely demolished, sculptor Alexander Milov decided to give it a new purpose.
Alexander Milov is known for having previously designed a giant robot which he placed in the city of Yuzhne, outside Odessa. With his newest project he enclosed the former statue of Lenin inside a giant statue of the Star Wars villain, Darth Vader. What’s more, the statue is far from a simple work of art. There is a router built inside the Sith Lord’s head that is able to deliver wi-fi access in the surrounding area.
“The Bronze Lenin was left inside, so that the grateful or not so grateful descendants could exhume him, if needed,” Milov explained in an interview. Asked about his opinion of the change occurring outside his workplace, one of the factory workers, the manager of the warehouse, gave a rater philosophical answer: “Everything glows, everything changes, old figures give wave to new ones, and so the world turns.”
What do you think of this interesting project? Would you like to have a statue of Darth Vader in your city?
