Humans have a complex relationship with robots. In many instances we are excited by robots – who doesn’t want to own a droid like Star Wars’ BB-8? But in other eras we are more skeptical and frightened by artificial intelligence (AI). Fortunately for humanity, scientists are finding more ways for robots to contribute to daily life than ever before. Who knows, the life they save might just be yours.
HRP-2 Kai and Jaxon
The Japanese are known for their great love of anime. A team of Japanese scientists put their love to humanitarian use by creating a team of robots called HRP-2 Kai and Jaxon. These anime-inspired robots walk upright, resemble anime characters and are trained to save lives. Since Japan lives in a geographically dangerous area that is prone to tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic activity, the country needs highly skilled search and rescue processes. The advantage of HRP-2 Kai and Jaxon is that they can go into areas that are too dangerous for humans, increasing the odds of survivors after disasters.
