In the short span of several years, smartphones have gone from being commodities few chose to buy, to becoming a must in every person’s gadget arsenal. However, despite becoming faster, more powerful and boasting larger screens, the overall design of smartphones has not been subject to significant changes. The DRASphone by R&D CORE Limited comes to change this. It seeks to combine two of history’s greatest cellphone trends: the clamshell of the 90’s and the current touchscreen display.
The smartphones of nowadays follow the same basic design. A larger or smaller touchscreen enclosed in metal or plastic. Gone is the variety of design that seemed to rule the 90’s. The cellphones of that time were designed as sliders, clamshells and flip phones. However, all these designs were cast aside when smartphones started gaining popularity. The foldable DRASphone has decided to give a nod to the past while at the same time aiming for the future. The new concept phone by R&D CORE Limited combines the clamshell trend of two decades past with a flexible screen. It bends in three different places, allowing its user to turn it into a compact and manageable form.
With a single fold, the DRASphone turns into a MiniDRAS. With yet another fold it turns into a MicroDRAS. In both version of the design, some parts of the touchscreen remain fully accessible. App notifications and other data are still available when the phone is in sleep mode. “Digital Resistive Area Sensing (DRAS®) overcomes capacitive touch screen limitations revolutionizing next-gen portable devices and wearable-tech, providing greater functionality and control. The DRAS® technology delivers superior spatial resolution. It can also sense finger force and requires no re-calibration. It’s not affected by humidity or temperature swings and only picks up intentional contacts,” wrote the company on their website.
What do you think of the DRASphone? Would you like to see such a concept phone reach production stage?
