If possible, all guitar players love to have custom made guitars or customize the ones they have bought in unique ways. Some choose a certain type of wood, a certain color or simply add drawings to their musical instruments. Others go even further and ask for unique looking guitars that simply dazzle anyone who sees them. However, not many people could have expected to be able to buy guitars made from skateboards. The Skate Guitars are repurposed skateboards that have been fashioned into fully-functioning guitars.
This unique project was put together by Argentine luthier Ezequiel Galasso and professional skateboarder Gianfranco de Gennaro Gilmour. Their idea was to find a new purpose for retired skateboards that would have otherwise been thrown away. They transformed them into unique, aesthetically pleasing electric guitars. Both the body and the neck of the new guitars are made from skateboard decks. The designers take advantage of the curvature of the skateboard in order to create the shape of the guitar.
Talking about their project, the duo explained: “Our intention is to achieve a simple and functional instrument, using the quality of the laminated maple, a 24” 3⁄4 scale and the accessories selected according to the particular style of each skateboard. Our instruments are completely handmade, one by one, by Ezequiel Galasso in our workshop located in Buenos Aires, Argentina.”
Skate Guitars is already proving to be a lucrative project. The project finds innovative ways to recycle skateboards. Until now, the duo has already received hundreds of inquiries about their unique skate guitars. The price for one such musical instrument is $1000. Considering the fact that each instrument is unique and no two of the same kind exist, it might not be such a high price.
What do you think of this interesting project? Would you like to play “Stairway to Heaven” on one of these Skate Guitars?
