Santa Anna staged a state funeral for his amputated leg
Santa Anna led an army against French forces who had invaded Veracruz, Mexico, two years after the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. During that fight, the general was severely wounded by a grapeshot fired from a French canon. Unfortunately, doctors were forced to amputate his leg. At that time, Santa Anna, buried his leg at his Veracruz hacienda, but after he once again assumed the presidency, in 1842, he exhumed his leg and buried it beneath a cemetery monument, after he paraded it to Mexico City.
Santa Anna proclaimed himself the “Napoleon of the West”

After Santa Anna’s personal secretary showed the material to a guy named Thomas Adams, he added flavorings and sweeteners to the plant and created “rubber chewing gum.” Adams started a chewing gum company that became one of the largest in the country, rivaled only by the developer of Chiclets and William Wrigley Jr.
