Also known as the Hoa Loa Prison, Hanoi Hilton was used by the French colonists in Vietnam to incarcerate political prisoners. Soon after, the North Vietnamese Army used it to incarcerate prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. It is well known that the prisoners from Hanoi Hilton were subject to starvation, torture and even murder. Among the prisoners that were incarcerated here, were James Stockdale, Bud Day and John McCain, who all spent time in this prison.

This prison was built in 1492 and it is considered to be the oldest European building in the south of Sahara. For more than two hundred years, Elmina Castle was used as a prison for people captured and then sold into slavery. It is well known that the conditions in this building where terrifying, because more than 200 people were locked in a single cell, with not enough space to lie down.

Robben Island is located off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. Over the years, this building served many functions, being even a leper colony. However, Robben Island also served as a prison for a time and it is famous for incarcerating prisoners such as Kgalema Motlanthe and Nelson Mandela. These days, Robben Island is a famous tourist destination and visitors must take a ferry from Cape Town to reach it.
