Elegance can be seen in every accessory we wear from our everyday clothing to the watches around our wrist. Though often mistaken for boring, everyday use objects, in the hands of the right people, a plain watch can become something to amaze. Stepan Sarpaneva’s new Korona K01 Northern Lights aims to do just that with its stunning design and out of the ordinary coloring.
The Finnish watchmaker, goldsmith, and designer Stepan Sarpaneva has always captures the essence of Nordic life in a celestial approach. His moon phase wristwatch is known as one of his signature creations and the new Korona K01 is a variant of said watch. It combines the well known and expressive moon face with a radiant Super-Luminova dial. The two layered construction, in turn, gives the watch a blue, green or violet glow in the dark that seems to mimic the aurora borealis.
Similarly to other Sarpaneva watches, the Korona K01’s moon phase disc is made of 18k red or white gold. The watch also features another distinctive element seen in other creations of the watchmaker: the blued, stainless steel grille. It has a slightly larger, 46 mm steel case that is designed to loosely resemble a crown. Moreover, it also comes with a Soprod A10 automatic movement inside.
Several changes have been made to the design of the new Korona watch. First, the movement has been modified in order to allow the moon disc to replace the date. The different gearing makes it create one revolution every 29.5 days. The rotor is also inlaid with a moon face. The blue and green versions of the Korona K01 come with steel cases, whereas the violet one has a black coating. The Sarpaneva Korona Northern Lights has been priced at €14,500 without taxes.
