Standing desks are becoming more and more popular. They are a good way to make sure you are not sitting down eight hours per day, but are either standing or alternating between the two. This has a good impact on your spine and general health. However, merely standing is not enough to take the place of active exercise. In order to combine working at a desk or exercising, some have created cycling desks while others, came up with more creative ideas. Joel Heath, for example, brought forth the Level Board.
Joel Heath was used to an active style of life. Skiing and snowboarding were on his to-do list whenever the snow was thicker than six inches. However, when he became the brand president of Teva footwear, he soon grew tired of sitting at a desk. Therefore he went ahead and purchased a sitting desk. However, the new addition did not do the trick it promised.
“I started experiencing pain in different places,” he explained. “I just felt like there had to be a better way. I started to play with the idea that if you put a subtle rocker under the foot, you could move out of a sedentary state.”
After developing his idea more carefully and going through 27 prototypes, Heath came up with the Level board. This is a surfboard like platform that forces the user to make subtle movements with their feet in order to remain upright. “It’s the first 10 minutes that I can tell someone has never been on it. From behind, you can see their fine twitch muscles working, and as they relax into it, you see their body already knows how to move,” he added, talking about his new invention.
The Level board features military-grade aluminum and a wooden finish on top. The design is versatile and the user will be able to change it by purchasing other top decks or base plates. The amount of motion required by the Level board is similar to that of walking. The board can be pre-ordered for $289. What do you think of this intriguing idea?
