In urban areas, traffic congestion is getting more and more difficult to deal with. A moment might come in the future when driving a car will become near impossible and people will have to start turning their attention towards alternative means of transport. In light of the changing needs of urban mobility, MINI has come with an interesting concept: the CitySurfer, a folding electric scooter.
When folded, the scooter is light and compact enough to be carried on buses and trains. It can easily be placed in the trunk of a car. The CitySurfer aims to provide a last mile transportation alternative. The scooter weighs only 18kg (40 lb) and is suited only for short distances. It has a top speed of 15 mph and a range of 15 miles. It is meant to be combined with other means of transport. For example, one can use it to finish the last couple of miles from the train station to the hotel or from the bus station to their homes.
The vehicle comes with a lithium-ion battery that can be charged by either a 12-volt automobile socket or a normal wall outlet. The acceleration of the CitySurfer is thumb oriented and driven by the gearless hub motor that can be found in the rear wheel. The CitySurfer also features wheels with pneumatic that allows drivers to use it even on bumpy roads.
BMW descried the MINI CitySurfer concept as a vehicle concept that “covers the entire range of individual urban mobility: commuting to work and school, sight-seeing and shopping, tourist excursions when on motor home, camping or boat holidays; spontaneous riding fun typical of MINI derives from the interaction between rider and electric motor when generating propulsion. “
What do you think of this scooter? Do you think the MINI CitySurfer will become reality in the future?
