The mountain town of Da Lat hides one of the most unusual pieces of architecture in Vietnam: the Hang Nga Villa, better known as the Crazy House. With its complex organic, non-rectilinear shapes and apparently a chaotic structure, the construction is hard to be described in words.
The guesthouse is actually a collection of buildings that at first glance look like a giant concrete banyan tree with twisted roots extend every which way. But once you start to explore it you might discover a surprise at every step: wire spider webs suspended from branches, stairways resemble tunnels and caves, inner bridges that intertwine the meandering rooms and no square windows, just something that resemble tree hollows. The magical atmosphere is maintained as well by various elements that imitate the nature: herbs, mushrooms, tree moss, resin, birds and huge animals.
The interior design is as fascinating as the outdoor. The house has ten themed guest rooms such as the tiger room, the eagle room, the ant room and the kangaroo room, with decorations and handcrafted furniture matching the theme.
Land eager room.
Crazy House is the brainchild of architect Hang Nga and is still a work in progress. Although it was intended to be a personal project, the house was opened to paid visits by tourists in late 1990 as a way of dealing with the huge losses it incurred.
Hang Nga confesses that through her project she wants to bring people and nature closer together. In fact, her major source of inspiration for this unusual piece of architecture is the natural environment surrounding the city of Da Lat. The works of architect Antoni Gaudi had also a great influence on the design. Some people even say it has some similarities with the Disneyland castle, but the most inspired were the people of Dalat who first call it the Crazy House.
Crazy House can be visited like a museum, but if you want to experience one of the most unusual accommodations in Vietnam, rooms are available for around £40 a night.
