Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction that usually features steam-powered machinery. Such settings are usually placed in alternate universes set in the 19th century in Britain’s Victorian Period or America’s “Wild West”, in fantasy universes or post-apocalyptic worlds. The stempunk genre is featured in literature, cinema and even music. However, Cape Town comes with something a little different. Their most famous coffee shop called TRUTH has a steampunk inspired interior design.
TRUTH was created by David Donde and designed by Haldane Martin. The steampunk coffee shop managed to win over its customers with both its delicious coffee and its unique design. The coffee shop aims to challenge convention and mediocrity by providing their beverages in an inspired setting. The name, TRUTH, means to mirror the core mandate of the coffee shop: honesty, inspiration and transparency. All those who decide to get a drink at TRUTH can be sure that the experience will be made most pleasant.
Every inch of the coffee shop will appease the eye with its beautiful decorations going from “large saw-blade tabletops to beautiful overstuffed booths.” At a first glance, the coffee making equipment looks incredibly complex, giving into to the whole steampunk look. Vintage typewriters can be seen strewn all across the coffee shop as well, in order to make the interior more interesting. Singer sewing machines and old candlestick telephones are placed alongside the typewriters. The interior design extends to the restrooms as well. There, customers can see exposed copper pipes, old extending mirrors and Victorian tap levers.
“With the exception of the authentic vintage fixtures, all of the furniture was specifically designed for Truth Coffee by Haldane Martin and his interior design team,” wrote Haldane Martin on his website. “The result is an iconic space with true Steampunk character.”
What do you think of this steampunk coffee shop? Would you like to go to TRUTH if you are ever in Cape Town?
