It is not very common to see someone treating with humor a cruel disease such as cancer. But photographer Bob Carey decided this would be a good therapy for his wife diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003.
Gifted with an exuberant creativity and positive attitude, Carey began taking pictures of him-self in a pink tutu in various different and unexpected places. The resulting work, now referred to as The Tutu Project, made things a little easier and funnier to his life when she undergo chemotherapy for a year and half. Moreover, during the treatment Linda used to show the funny images with her husband dressed only in a pink tutu to other cancer suffering women and all of them were enjoying it very much.
In 2012 The Tutu Project became viral on the internet and in the same year Bob and Linda self-published Ballerina, a book that compiles lots of funny tutu images made by Bob over the years. All the proceeds from selling are going directly to The Carey Foundation, a non-profit organization established by Bob Carey and his wife to provide support to men and women diagnosed with breast cancer, survivors, and their family members.
Listen to Bob narrating how his project evolved in time.
And here is a newer video with both Bob and Linda.
From what was meant to be a funny encouragement for his wife, The Tutu Project has become a major source of inspiration for people all over the world, as well as a support for those suffering by this terrible disease.
