Marienkirche is the biggest church that you will find in Lubeck. Its construction started in 1270 and was completed in the early 14th century. This church has an interesting early Gothic design with a Baroque dome atop the tower. Marienkirche was designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans, which was also the architect of the Brandenburg Gate. After the Reformation, in 1539 the Marienkirche became Protestant. During the World War II, the church was really damaged and restored in 1950.
