Iris Grace is a little girl of only five years old. She was diagnosed with autism four years ago and her parents promptly sought therapists in light of her diagnosis. In doing so, Iris revealed she has received one of the unexpected gifts that this poorly understood neurological disorder can grant. The little girl from the United Kingdom has begun using her exceptional focus and attention to detail to create amazing masterpieces.
Though she is five years old, because of her autism Iris is still learning to speak. Her parents had her start speech therapy, but alongside it they also introduced painting. That was when they discovered her amazing talent. Iris’ beautiful paintings have won her many fans. Those who enjoy her works often liken them to Monet’s works. Talking about her work, Iris’ mother explained: “We have been encouraging Iris to paint to help with speech therapy, joint attention and turn taking. Then we realised that she is actually really talented and has an incredible concentration span of around 2 hours each time she paints. I make up some cups of very watery paints, she chooses which one she would like to use and gets me to make more when she needs it and she mixes her own colours from mug to mug. Her autism has created a style of painting which I have never seen in a child of her age, she has an understanding of colours and how they interact with each other.”
In the summer of 2013 Iris’ story was published globally in over 207 different countries. At the moment, 58 thousand people are following her on Facebook and over 1.5 million people have visited her website. Her paintings have been sold to art collectors all over the world, in Europe, America, South America and Asia. The money raised from selling these paintings go to purchasing art supplies and continuing her therapy.
