Plastic tableware is widely used today at parties and various events. These items are very convenient to be used just one time, but afterwards the vast majority is destined for a very long life in landfills. The amount of waste that results at parties and events in the USA is surpassed only by the construction industry which is quite an alarming situation.
Back in 2009, performance artist and party lover Emily Doubilet decided to change this reality in a way that doesn’t affect the fun at parties, but do respect the environment. Together with Harvard graduate Jessica Holsey she founded Susty Party, a Brooklyn based business that produces stylish and responsibly made disposable tableware.
All Susty Party products – plates, bowls, cups, straws, cutlery, tablecloths, napkins – are made from materials that are renewable resources. These resources might be rapidly growing plants, trees harvested from sustainably managed forests, even recycled or salvaged plant material. At Susty Party one can also order the first and only compostable, bio-based tablecloth on the market today.
There is no room for harmful chemicals, plastics or dyes in the production of Susty Party products. Instead there are used lots of ingredients verified free of any toxicity when they break down into soil (edible or FDA food-contact approved ingredients, water-based inks, elemental-chlorine free dyes and so on).
Besides producing fun, good looking and environmental-friendly products, the business also deserves praise for its partnerships with non-profit factories that provide training and employment to the blind and visually impaired.
The two young entrepreneurs were featured on “Shark Tank” and included in Forbes “30 Under 30” list in the Food & Wine category of this year. They were also awarded the Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneur Award by the Hitachi Foundation for their innovative approach to environmental sustainability and commitment to creating jobs for the visually impaired.
If you want to impress your guests, protect the nature and also avoid wasting hours on doing dishes, you will definitely fall in love with Susty Party tableware! Starting with this month the products will be available for purchase at 276 Target stores nationwide, but if you don’t live in the USA you can make orders on their site: sustyparty.com.
