Sculptures of any kind are always a pleasure to watch and admire. Be they realistic or fantastical in nature, they attract our attention because of their artist’s attention to detail and incredible talent. During a Westcountry seaside sand festival, a group of international artists decided to create stunning sand works inspired by famous fictional characters.
The team of artists had diverse muses, such as characters from BBC’s Sherlock and The Lord of the Rings. Visitors coming to Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth will be able to enter a magical world, that will take their breath away. The sculptures are up to five meters high. Czech artist Radovan Zivny themed his sand works around J.R.R.Tolkien’s characters. Gandalf, Gollum and the Eye of Sauron will definitely stand out to all fans of the books. Other artists chose tv shows, and crafted sand sculptures of Weeping Angels ( Doctor Who ). Moreover, Sherlock and John Watson can be seen standing in front of 221B Baker Street.
Each sculpture took between five days and three weeks to complete. All of the can now withstand force seven winds and heavy rain. Moreover, despite their stunning appearance, visitors have been assured that these sand works are truly made only from water and sand. It is said that the sand from Weymouth is the best in the world for this job, due to the particular size and shape of the grains.
The festival was opened to the public by author of the Stonewylde series Kit Berry. It will run until November 2nd. Would you like to see these stunning sand works?
