Nowadays, we can find consoles in many houses all over the world. We play games and use complex controllers that give us a plethora of options. However, the bond we formed with old style controllers is not the same as the one we form nowadays with modern day consoles. In order to illustrate his history with video controllers, Javier Laspiur created the series CONTROLLERS.
Javier Laspiur is a photographer based in Madrid. His photographic series Controllers: 30 Years Online documents the development of video game controllers throughout the years and the artist’s history with them. The collections goes back to 1983 and shows both famous and less famous controllers, slowly coming up to the present. All photos are shot from a popular gaming position, with the hands forward slowly resting on the top of the knees. The gamer sits on the same familiar sofa in different outfits that are a soft nod to the period of the video game controller.
Laspiur created images that almost resemble posters. The photos are placed on a grey background with the manufacturer’s logo underneath and the year that he played with the controller. CONTROLLERS is meant as a nostalgic look back to the video game controllers we all cherished.
The series is not meant as a definite history. There are many controllers that have not made it in Laspiur’s series. Moreover, the artist preferred to add the years in which he used the controllers as opposed to their launch date. However, CONTROLLERS is definitely an enchanting walk down memory lane.
All of Javier Laspuir’s photos can be seen on Behance. The nostalgic collection filled with joysticks, d-pads, and triggers is definitely something any video game lover will want to check out at least once. Who knows, maybe you will even be inspired to dust off your old controllers and give them a try once more. What do you think of the artist’s collection?
