Architecture aims to surprise and dazzle. It is not only the shape that attracts attention, but also the material used for the architectural design and sometimes its location. The Ice Hotels attract attention because they are crafted entirely from ice. Other constructions are shaped like flowers. However, it is the sea and floating objects that make us use our imagination the most.
We would never expect to see constructions such as a swimming pool or a skate ramp on the vast expanses of the sea or of the ocean. However, such floating object exist and they probably aim to surprise all those who see them. Discover three of them below:
1. Floating Forest, Australia
Homebush Bay in Sydney, Australia is home to what has remained behind from the ship-breaking yard that operated during the middle of the 20th century. Large vessels were brought here once they had outlived their usefulness to be dismembered. One such ship was the SS Ayrfield, built in 1911. During the Second World War it was used as a transport ship. In 1972 it was brought to the bay to be dismantled. However, work ceased at the yard and time decided a new fate for the old ship. A floating forest made its home on the Ayrfield, trees and other vegetation sprouting over the last few decades.
2. Floating Golf Course, USA
A golf course is perhaps the last thing one would expect to see on water. However, the main attraction of the Coeur d’Alene Resort is its 18 hole golf course. Most famous is the 14th hole that is placed on an artificial island that is moved around on a boat. The island never stays for more than one day in the same spot.
3. Floating Skate Ramp, USA
Last on our list of floating objects is this amazing skate ramp. The man behind this novel idea was pro skateboarder Bob Burnquist. After skating on every type of ramp available, the man decided he wanted to try something new. Visit California made his dream happen and launched the ramp on Lake Tahoe.
