Smartphones, smartwatches, smart lights and smart houses; all of these are the inventions of last years that aim to make our life easy. Gadgets become more and more developed. Their functions grow in number and the aim is to decrease our workload. A new invention called Boogio adds another smart object to the collection, bringing our shoes in this category.
Boogio will turn our footwear into smart shoes, allowing them to be used as gaming controls as well as health monitors. The system is made of two devices that are placed in each shoe. These devices gather information and send it to a mobile phone. The part of the system that is placed in the shoe is paper thin. In this way the wearer will not sense it. Data is transmitted with the help of a Bluetooth device that is attached to the side of the shoe.
REFLEX Labs, the team that created Boogio claims that their system uses 60,000 layers of pressure sensitivity. This allows it to feel even the smallest 3D movements in real time. The system could be used in gaming. Paired with Oculus Rift it detects movement and translates it in the virtual world. Combining gaming and Boogio, a new system could be created to increase motivation at fitness. In the medical field, the device could provide feedback on recovery from injuries.
At the moment, REFLEX labs is taking pre-orders for Boogio. The price of the system is US$189. The previous version was sold to developers for $2,000. This is a beta version, therefore it has not reached its final stage yet. The package is made of two beta boards with shoe clips, two shoe inserts and two chargers. Shipping is also included in the price. The device will be shipped by the end of 2014.
