Falling asleep at the wrong time can be a serious problem. Some fall asleep in class and receive low grades as a result. Others fall asleep during important meetings due to various reasons. Even more problematic and dangerous is falling asleep while a person is driving. This can lead to serious accidents. The Spark Watch comes as a measure to prevent its users from dozing off.
Several devices already exist and have the same purpose. However, the Spark Watch is first and foremost an object that most of us wear everyday. Apart from telling the time, it also has two integrated motion sensors. One of these is used to detect the velocity of the user’s movement. The other measures how often they occur.
The data is then processed and the device establishes a pattern for the user’s movements. If the watch senses it has remained unmoved for too long, it will activate the adjustable 12-volt vibration motor. This motor will cause the watch to vibrate and give the user a nudge to wake up.
Users do not have to take the watch off if they want to go to sleep or watch a movie in peace. They simply have to switch the “Spark mode” off. The watch itself is water-resistant. It has a stainless steel case and comes with a 1.63-inch full-color LED screen. The current model is a prototype that uses a lithium-ion battery that lasts about six days before it has to be charged again.
The company that wishes to market the Spark Watch is currently holding a campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds. Those interested in acquiring such a watch can make a pledge of US$49. If it hits the markets, its retail price will be bumped to $149. Do you think the Spark Watch is useful to keep its user awake?
