Born Theodore Robert Cowell, in 1946, Ted Bundy was one of America’s most prolific serial killers. Charming and smart, Ted Bundy would have had a bright future in politics, were it not for his psychopathic tendencies. Despite being born to a single, unwed mother who then moved with his grandparents in order to raise him and behaved like a sister, more than a mother, Ted Bundy performed well in school and was well behaved. Though extremely shy, he pursued his education. Most serial killers have above average intelligence, and Bundy was one of them. After being heartbroken, he let his true self come to life.
Ted Bundy had a fairly consistent M.O.( modus operandi) He would approach his victim in a public, sometimes crowded place, and would use a ruse to gain the victim’s trust. He had a very charismatic character and had a remarkable advantage in that his facial features were attractive yet not memorable, and would often change his appearance by growing a beard or changing his hairstyle.
All of his victims were white females, all in the age range of 15-25 years, all resembling his college love by having long straight hair parted in the middle. However, Ted Bundy denied this theory by saying that his victims only fit his criteria of being ”young and attractive”. Every recovered skull showed signs of blunt force trauma and of strangulation.
He would go through much trouble by transporting his victims a long way from the place he abducted them and would usually drink before proceeding with a murder .As Bundy himself stated, he was an impulsive and amateur killer in his early years but developed to be a ‘predator’, seeking victims that weren’t as weak as the previous ones.
As many other serial killers, Ted Bundy kept souvenirs from his victims such as severed skulls, items of clothing and photographs. The reason why he kept them was primarily to relive endlessly his murder and get the satisfaction he needed.
Bundy was a sexual offender who practiced nechrophilia. He admitted to having visited his victims’ corpses, apply make-up and have sexual intercourse up until the point where the decomposing body would no longer allow him to. Bundy was diagnosed as a manic depressive, who had, as he himself said, an addiction to violent pornography. Later he was diagnosed as a psychopath. Ted Bundy is believed to have killed over 35 women.
He tried to use his victims as a way in which to escape the death penalty, but he failed, showing the world his evil side once more. Due to his charm, many believed him to be innocent and many women even fell in love with him. Serial killers have been long studied by psychologists, but can their behavior be placed solely on their difficult lives?
