Tim Harris owns the self-proclaimed friendliest restaurant in the world, where breakfast, lunch and hugs are served on a daily basis. He is a university graduate, medal-winning special Olympian, motivational speaker and human. Tim Harris is the living reminder of what being human actually means. He is the epitome of kindness and perseverance, even though the world wasn’t always as kind to him. Tim Harris was born with Down Syndrome, and life for him wasn’t always a smooth sail. Nevertheless, he managed to achieve all his goals in life, which culminated with his most burning desire: owning his own restaurant.
Tim’s Place, owned and managed by Tim Harris, sits in Albuquerque, New Mexico, US. Tim dreamed about owning his own place since he was 13. Always a high achiever ( he was voted Homecoming King in high school, with the highest number of votes in their history) Tim worked hard towards his dream. Since he opened his restaurant, Tim Harris has served plenty of meals. But he loves serving his guests something more special: hugs. “I love giving all the customers a hug because I want them to feel comfortable and connected and being around friends” said Tim Harris in an interview. According to an electronic counter on the wall, Tim Harris has given more than 32,000 warm embraces.
He works his way to every table, talking to the people who eat at Tim’s Place, making them feel welcome and appreciated. “I do not let my disability crush the dreams. People with disabilities, they can do anything they set their minds to. We’re special. We are a gift to the world.”
Tim Harris is an impressive man, we must say. He fought for his dreams, no matter the odds or the obstacles, not losing his kindness along the way. He really is a gift to the world!
