Recycling has become an important part of our everyday lives. All of us try to do our part to protect the environment. Be it simply making sure we recycle all we can, or actually creating new, greener inventions, it cannot be doubted that our focus is leaning more and more in that direction. Keeping urban coffee drinkers in mind, Ben Melinger created the new Smash Cup coffee mug.
Smash Cup is a leak-free, environmentally-friendly coffee cup. Above all that it is both reusable and collapsible. You can simply “smash” it flat and carry it with you wherever you go. This new cup has two important parts: an accordion-shaped body and a leak-proof lid. The cup is made of food-grade, BPA-free silicon and can hold up to 12 oz. Its lid seals the cup tightly with only a slight turn, preventing any spills. Its creator, Ben Melinger, explained that the Smash Cup was born out of both convenience and care for the environment.
“I was actually at a coffee shop with friends when we started talking about the paper cups we were holding. We go through tons of these cups, and don’t like the negative impact we’re having on the planet. Big travel mugs with handles are so cumbersome in a city setting, so we started to think about what a reusable cup would look like if it were made for someone like us.”
The Smash Cup can be dissembled and washed in a dishwasher. The company behind Smash Cup will also collect the cups and recycle them. Although silicone is recyclable, some municipalities will not accept it. Therefore, the company aims to play a larger role in protecting the environment. Smash Cup has just started its Kickstarter campaign. Their goal is to reach $10,000 in order to start production.
