In the morning, most of us need our daily doze of caffeine. We wake up, get dressed in a hurry and dash to the nearest cafe where we buy our takeaway coffee. However, once we finish it, we rarely recycle the cup. It ends up in the nearest trash as we continue our way to work. The Green Your Cup coffee cup comes to change things. It is the first fully recyclable paper cup in the world.
Most of the time, traditional coffee cups are made of paper laminated with plastic making them very hard to recycle. Moreover, the EU health and safety regulations state that these cups cannot be made of coffee or paper alone. A thin layer of plastic is added to the cup to keep the drink warm and stop the cup from getting soggy. Unfortunately, because of the way it is attached, the lining is very hard to remove in order to recycle the cup properly.
British entrepreneur and engineer Martin Myerscough designed the Green Your Cup coffee cups to solve this problem. This new invention mimics the look and feel of traditional coffee cups. However, it has a thin film liner that can be detached easily to make recycling much easier. What remains after that layer is removed is 100% recyclable paper that can be thrown in paper recycling bins.
“I always thought it was such a waste that disposable coffee cups couldn’t be easily recycled. In these times of limited resources and diminishing landfill space, a single-use cup that can’t be recycled is an indulgence we just cannot afford. I hope Green Your Cup will make a difference to how people think about the wastefulness of some of our everyday habits,” explained Martin Myerscough.
