In Peru, the construction industry experiences very strong growth. Unfortunately, so does the amount of pollution in the country. For example, in Lima, the capital of Peru, the pollution levels are triple the maximum recommended by the World Health Organization, which makes it the city with the highest air pollution levels in all of South America.
Instead of contributing to the problem with the rebuild of their new campus in Lima, University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Peru decided to create an air purifying billboard.
According to the University, the billboard is able to suck pollution from the sky and returns purified air to the surrounding areas.
Because it was to be installed in a construction area, the air purifying billboard was specifically designed to filter pollutants such as dust, small particles of metal, along with bacteria and germs. The cleaning process uses recyclable water and basic thermodynamics to clean the air. Also, the billboard uses only about 2.5 kilowatts of electricity per hour and its benefits extend to a radius of five city blocks.
The effects on the environment seems to be quite substantial as the billboard can purify 100,000 cubic meters of urban air per day, which would be equivalent to the work of 1,200 mature trees!
Through their unique initiative UTEC tries not only to minimize the impact of their work on local air quality, but also to show the world that ‘’engineering is behind everything’’.
The air purifying billboard is being promoted with the help of ad agency FCB Mayo (formerly Mayo DraftFCB). UTEC’s director of promotion, Jessica Rúas, says that their project is “closely aligned with the university’s mission of educating creative engineers who are sensitive to social needs and have extensive scientific knowledge that enables them to become researchers and find solutions to society’s problems.”
This also explains why UTEC is not at it first project of this kind. Last year the University produced the first water-generating billboard that drew media attention from all around the world.
If the technology proves successful in Lima let’s hope it will be adopted by other brands and organizations around the world.
