Small-scale living is becoming a new trend lately. People have started prefering to spend less and make do with less space, instead of wasting more money than they can afford on big, lavish houses. Many ideas have so far been ised, with more or less success, for designing tiny houses. The latest such addition to the crowd is the Salsa Box.
With prices starting from US$22,500, the Salsa Box stands out due to its interior layout that makes living in 96 sq ft an appealing possibility. This tiny house features a kitchen with storage, sleeping quarters and a bath/shower combo. At a first glance, it almost makes you think of a nice and comfortable studio.
The Salsa Box started as a demonstration. It was meant to show workshop students what was involved in creating a very small house. From there, it became a product that could be purchased. There are three versions available, the smallest one measuring 3.5 x 2.4 m (12 x 8 ft).
It is built using wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. It also has a metal roof and low-emissivity windows that provide better insulation than regular ones. The furnishing is very compact, meant to not take up more space than necessary. Some of the amenities include an electrical hookup, a flushing toilet, an electric hot water heater and the above mentioned mini-tub/shower combo. Moreover, the Salsa Box comes with a queen sized bed. There is an impressive amount of storage space as well, considering the size of this tiny house.
The Salsa Box can be attached to any trailer. It can also be modified to rest on foundations. For those who wish to rely purely on themselves, the flushing toilet can be swapped with a composting one. Solar panels can be added to generate electricity. Also, a water catchment system can be placed on the roof.
