The creative direction certainly took a risk. Wieden+Kennedy decided to give this ad a twist- it’s all animation. Not a single flesh and bones footballer in sight, just animations. Of course, Nike is such a strong brand that a bit of risk taking is of essence. With this bold movement, Nike left its competitors to bite the dust, similar to Cristiano Ronaldo.
The plot of the latest Nike Football ad goes as follows: though brilliant, human footballers are subject to errors- in decision making, in technique and so on. So clones of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr., Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Andrés Iniesta, Franck Ribery, David Luiz and Tim Howard are created by Mad Scientists. They are error-free: they take no risks, are machinelike and precise and are of course, ready to stomp on their human counterparts. These events lead to the ultimate showdown, dubbed The Last Game. This is not just a football match it’s a fight for the future of this sport. The animation style reminds us of The Incredibles, with a simple yet pleasant storyline, with touches of sillyness and humor. It’s sort of a short Pixar movie.
What’s impressive about this Nike Football ad is the fact that they removed the players, who are overly stylized anyway, and took a step forward by turning them into animations. Even though it’s not as emotional as the other World Cup commercials, the change of pace is refreshing and welcome. Nike Football took an unexpected turn in its endless celebration of this sport and we love it!
